Election Commission Announces Implementation of Supreme Court Decision on Reserved Seats

 

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the implementation of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the matter of reserved seats. Following this decision, the reserved seats for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidates, which were previously withdrawn by the ECP, have been reinstated.

 

Background

The Supreme Court, in its decision, stated that PTI candidates should be given representation on reserved seats. This decision came against the ECP’s previous ruling, which had declared PTI’s intra-party elections illegal, leading to the withdrawal of these seats. The ECP had claimed that PTI’s intra-party elections were not conducted properly, which resulted in the withdrawal of the ‘bat’ symbol.

 

Supreme Court’s Decision

The Supreme Court declared the ECP’s action illegal and ordered the reinstatement of PTI candidates. The court emphasized that the mandate given by the public should be accurately represented, and in light of this, PTI candidates were reinstated on reserved seats. This decision has dealt a blow to the governing coalition as it has eliminated their two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.

 

ECP’s Response

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the Election Commission stated that they did not misinterpret any decision. They claimed that PTI candidates had not declared their party affiliation in their documents, which led to the action against them. The ECP stressed that their decisions were in accordance with legal requirements and that they had not misinterpreted any decision.
