Islamabad High Court Delays Decision on PTI Protest Permission Amid Rising Tensions

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has postponed its ruling on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) request for permission to hold a protest in the federal capital. The court’s decision to reserve judgment follows PTI’s petition seeking authorization for their demonstration.

On Friday, PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan called on supporters to “fully participate” in a nationwide peaceful protest. He highlighted the party’s core demands: the immediate release of detained PTI leaders and supporters, maintaining national peace, and addressing the escalating inflation crisis.

Justice Saman Rifat presided over the hearing for the petition filed by PTI leader Amir Mughal. The Islamabad administration had previously denied PTI’s request to hold a protest on July 26, citing security concerns. The state counsel informed the court that the federal capital’s administration had rejected all political rally requests due to the tense security situation.

During the court proceedings, Justice Saman questioned the possibility of permitting PTI’s protest on Monday. She also inquired about whether Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) had been granted permission for their demonstration.

AG Shaukat responded that JI had also been denied permission, citing the imposition of Section 144 in Islamabad, which restricts public gatherings. He mentioned that the city was effectively closed due to the JI protest.

Justice Saman scrutinized the relevance of the JI sit-in to PTI’s protest and questioned why PTI was denied permission. She noted that the F-9 area, where PTI intended to protest, was not covered by Section 144. AG Shaukat clarified that Section 144 had been imposed across all of Islamabad.

Justice Saman remarked, “You might as well declare that you never want to allow PTI to protest.”

AG Shaukat reiterated that permission had not been granted, referring to previous instances such as the TLP sit-in during Ashura.

In response to the uncertainty, AG Shaukat stated, “We do not know what the situation will be on Monday.”

After hearing arguments from both sides, the court has reserved its decision on the matter.
